How Can Students and Teachers Assist?

Using a web-based reporting system, students from across the country will be able to participate in the collection of distribution data and help in the identification of many of the non-native, accidentally introduced insects that are spreading.  The web-site will feature pictures and drawings of some of these insects and their feeding damage.  For most organisms, these features are distinctive, allowing non-entomologists to participate.

Student collected data will be used to build an extensive database providing information on the location of introductions, rate and direction of their spread, and the species of insects feeding on the plant.  This database will serve to increase our understanding of the ecology of the species, and to identify potential biological control agents to assist with prevention efforts and management decisions.

Protocols and instruction will be available in both print and electronic forms to assist teachers and their students with collection techniques, measurements, data reporting, and identification of the insects living in and on the Phragmites.
