Site Identification:
- Obviously the most important asset is access to one or several Phragmites
stands in
your area. You will need to decide what features make your
participation easier or safer.
- Working along roadsides (where Phragmites may be plentiful) can be
hazardous and insects may not be very common if the stand is regularly mowed
or herbicide is used for control (but this could also be a question you may
want to investigate).
- Large stands (several acres) can be difficult to work in because old stems
break down only partially, making orientation in the stand difficult and
walking a straight line nearly impossible.
- Chose one that is safe for you and your students but large enough that
5-10 samples of 1 square meter each can be obtained (see below).
- Be sure to have permission from the landowner before implementing your
study at a site and thoroughly explain what you will be doing so that she/he
is aware of all of the components of the study.
