9:30 Dr. Bernd Blossey: Overview of Native Phragmites in N.A.
10:00 Depart for Field (vanpool).
10:30 - Arrive at TNC Choptank River site. Take walking tour of marsh via boardwalk. View native and non-native stands in a low salinity tidal marsh system.
11:30 - Depart site.
12:00 - Arrive back at Horn Point Lab.

* Please Note: In an effort to accommodate as many people as possible, two identical sessions have been planned, a Morning and Afternoon Workshop. The lecture room can accommodate up to 60 people for each sessions Power Point presentation and each Field Trip is limited to 40 people (a TNC condition). If attendance is less than anticipated, the Workshop may be re-structured to a single round of Power Point presentations, starting at 8:30AM (with Registration starting at 8:00AM), followed by two successive Field Trips, a late morning and early afternoon group. We will notify all participants by Friday, July 11 by 2PM if this change is required. Come prepared, rain or shine, and as in most wetlands, insects are quite abundant. Boots are not required, barring rain.

Directions:

From Baltimore:
From the Baltimore (Maryland) Beltway, I695, take I97 south to Rt. 50/301 east
to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. Once on the Eastern Shore, stay on Rt. 50 to
Cambridge, MD, crossing the Choptank River on the Frederick Malkus Bridge.
From Washington
D.C.:
Take Rt 50 east from the
Washington DC Beltway I95/495, to Cambridge, MD on Maryland's Eastern Shore,
crossing the Choptank River on the Frederick Malkus Bridge. After the bridge, go
to 3rd stop light and turn right (at the WaWa station). Go one block and turn
right again onto Washington St. (Rt. 343). Stay on this road for about 3.5
miles. Look for the UMCES sign on the right side of the road. Bear right onto
Horn Point Rd at Longs Grocery. Continue for about 1.5 miles. The entrance to
the lab is on the right and is flanked by two statues of sheep. The workshop is
in the first building on the right at about .5 miles down the lane.

An illustrated guide to the key field characteristics unique to native and non-native Phragmites populations in the mid-Atlantic Region.
Key habitat associations will be presented, along with strategies/approaches that help focus field surveys on wetland areas with the highest prospect of supporting native populations. The history and genetics of Phragmites in North America will also be briefly reviewed. The material is presented in a Power Point format on a single CD. Copies will be distributed at the Mid-Atlantic Native Phragmites Workshop on July 16, 2003 and is also available on request from:
